Our history

Founded in 1909, Luxembourg Confederation is an employers’ organisation that supports companies from the services, retail, and transport sectors – with complete independence and political neutrality.

1904-1906

The pioneers – The Union Commerciale of the City of Luxembourg and the publication of the periodical Der kaufmännische Mittelstand are established. At the same time, commercial unions are created in the localities of Esch-sur-Alzette, Dudelange, Ettelbrück, Remich, Grevenmacher, Diekirch, and Wiltz.

1909

Founding of the Fédération des Commerçants du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg. Mr Charles Nouveau is its first president.

1911

The merger of the employers' organisations of retailers and craftsmen. The periodical Handels- und Gewerbeblatt is published as a joint edition.

1914-1918

First World War – The Federation is forced to more or less cease its activities. The publication of the periodical is also halted due to a lack of financial resources.

1919

Post-war period – The Federation resumes its activities and experiences steady growth. This leads to the emergence of the first professional groups.

1928-1932

The difficult years – This period is marked by the separation from the Union Commerciale of the City of Luxembourg and the craftsmen, who regain their autonomy.

1933

L'Union Commerciale de la Ville de Luxembourg reintegrates the Fédération des Commerçants du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg.

1940-1944

The German occupation – The various central organisations and the cooperatives established over the years are dissolved. The publication of the Handelsblatt, which had been launched shortly before, is discontinued.

1945

The liberation – The 16 professional groups of the time resume their activities, and the Handelsblatt is published again.

1947

The year 1947 marks the creation of the Fédération Luxembourgeoise des Négociants en Gros.

1949

On 13 November 1949, the Fédération des Commerçants du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg celebrates the 40th anniversary of its creation.

The fifties

This period is marked by the creation of the Common Market at the European level and the establishment of new professional groups within the Fédération des Commerçants, which commemorates its 50th anniversary on 18 October 1959.

1966

The secretariats of the Fédération des Commerçants and the Fédération Luxembourgeoise des Négociants en Gros are brought together.

The seventies

This period is characterised by an unprecedented development of retail, which is nevertheless abruptly slowed down by the energy crisis.

1980

On 8 January 1980, the Fédération des Commerçants and the Fédération des Négociants en Gros merge, giving birth to the Confédération du Commerce luxembourgeois, bringing together 45 professional groups!

1999

The Confédération du Commerce Luxembourgeois celebrates its 90th anniversary.

2000

The Union Luxembourgeoise des Entreprises, the umbrella association of employers’ organisations, was created by various stakeholders with the ambition to ensure the competitiveness and attractiveness of companies by focusing on three key areas: social dialogue, employment and labour law, taxation, and social security.

2001

On 22 January 2001, the Confédération du Commerce Luxembourgeois adopts a new name: clc (Confédération luxembourgeoise du commerce). From then on, in the context of the growing tertiarisation of the emerging information society economy, the employers' organisation represents three sectors: retail, transport, and services.

2023

The clc becomes Luxembourg Confederation and continues its lobbying work for its 23 affiliated federations from the services, retail, and transport sectors, currently representing 1,800 Luxembourg companies.
